Data rights and reuse

Know where the data comes from.

This inventory explains the sources behind The College Almanac, the attribution they require, and the limits that apply to reuse.

How to read this inventory

A source link identifies the governing dataset or policy. It does not transfer ownership of college content, logos, photographs, or third-party material to The College Almanac or its visitors.

IPEDS, College Scorecard, EADA, Clery, Census ACS, HUD, FBI CDE, CMS, NOAA, EPA, BLS, and BTS

Federal public datasets

Public-source terms

Structured public facts may support the product. Preserve agency attribution, release year, retrieval date, definitions, and limitations; recheck each source’s current notice and API terms when an adapter changes.

Federal research data

Public data

Preserve the federal source, reporting year, retrieval date, field definitions, and the institution-wide scale caveat. The site computes three-year averages from the annual public files.

OpenStreetMap

Attribution and service limits

ODbL attribution is required and is displayed on the map. The current community tile service is best-effort and may limit heavy use; it is not an unlimited commercial map backend.

Admissions, housing, dining, honors, support, catalogs, and policy pages

Official college pages

Source-linked summaries

Use pages as evidence for short factual summaries and link to the exact source. Do not republish substantial page text, photographs, PDFs, seals, or logos without a separate right or permission.

Institutional Common Data Sets

Links only in version 1

Every profile offers an official-domain CDS search. Use a direct institutional CDS link only after verification. Search results are discovery leads; The College Almanac does not extract, normalize, interpret, or republish CDS values in version 1.

Institution names, wordmarks, seals, mascots, and logos

College names and marks

Factual naming only

Names can identify institutions factually. Logos and marks need a separate trademark/brand-use review before they are added broadly or used in marketing in a way that could imply affiliation.

Open-source notices

Retain the required open-source license and font notices in the deployed artifact. Re-run the dependency inventory before each public release and after major upgrades.

Operational inventory—not legal advice

Rights can change by release, endpoint, jurisdiction, and intended use. For every release, retain exact source notices with the imported files. Anyone republishing data or institutional material should review the source's current terms for the intended use.
