Research landscape

Explore research scale—and the fields behind it.

Compare institutional research activity, spending, and doctorate production, then investigate undergraduate access, centers, facilities, and opportunities in any academic field. Health is one field of research, not the organizing frame.

$

Institution-wide research spending

NSF HERD reports annual research and development expenditures across fields. The latest year and a three-year average are kept with each record.

PhD

Research doctorates awarded

IPEDS completions count doctor's degrees classified as research or scholarship awards across reported fields.

Field

Investigate undergraduate access

Scale alone does not tell you whether undergraduates can join a lab, archive, studio, field site, or funded project.

Research scale is not a program ranking. These are institution-level federal measures. They do not establish undergraduate access, teaching quality, graduate placement, or strength in a particular discipline.

Federal sources

Spending comes from the NSF NCSES Higher Education Research and Development Survey. Research doctorates come from IPEDS Completions. Both are public federal datasets; years and retrieval dates are preserved with the records.

The Carnegie Classification groups U.S. colleges by research activity and other characteristics. The College Almanac doesn't reproduce those designations.
